Ukraine Snowflake Template – PDF (Advanced)

This snowflake was designed with the help of our Ukrainian friends who taught us about the different symbols of Ukraine. The tryzub has a long history (over a thousand years, if not more). In a similar shape of a trident, it symbolizes the warriors protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. Ukraine is one of the largest suppliers of sunflowers in the world. The sunflower has historically represented peace. In 1996, ministers from the U.S., Russia and Ukraine marked Ukraine’s nuclear weapon disarmament by planting sunflowers at the Pervomaysk missile base. While the peace did not last, the symbol remains strong and has become a call on leaders to plant the seeds again for a more peaceful future.

I love these two symbols because they perfectly describe the Ukrainian families we have been privileged to serve. They are strong, resilient, and have pride for their country. And with that strength comes a determination for peace, to reestablish the security and freedom taken from their land.

Pirate Snowflake Template – PDF (Advanced)

The Pirate Paper Snowflake takes the symbols of a pirate flag and puts them into a six-sided snowflake. The pirate flag is a perfect model for a snowflake since is a symmetric white shape against a black background. There are different versions of a pirate flag, some with a full skull, some with skull missing a jawbone. Most pirate flags show a skull with bones crossed either below the skull or behind the skull. Also, some pirate flags have a skull with swords below it. That is what I picked when designing this snowflake. The Skull and Sword combination is also what we see on the popular movie series, “Pirates of the Caribbean.” This original is an original snowflake pattern designed in 2022. Jonah and the Whale Snowflake – PDF (Intermediate)

The Jonah and the Whale Snowflake Template represents one of the most well known stories from the Bible. Jonah was commanded by God to go to the people of Nineveh and preach repentance to them. Johan didn’t want to go to Nineveh and went the opposite direction. While at sea, God sent a storm that threatened to destroy the ship. The crew decided to throw Jonah overboard to bring the storm to an end. While in the water, Jonah was swallowed by a giant fish, often referred to as a whale. Johan remained in the belly of the fish for three days before being spit out. This experience humbled Jonah and he ended up going to Nineveh. Good thing he did because the people of Nineveh accepted his teachings and repented of their ways.

This snowflake pattern has a boat with sails and a whale with Jonah inside.

The David and Goliath Snowflake Template represents one of the most well known stories from the Bible. Young David leaves the sheep of the field to take on the Giant called Goliath. Instead of wearing the armor offered by the King, David is armed with only his sling and some stones. Despite his large size and armor, Goliath doesn’t stand a chance against David. This pattern shows a large, armored Goliath facing the tiny David.

The Webb Telescope Snowflake template is based on the James Webb Space Telescope. It has a giant mirror consisting of 18 smaller hexagon-shaped mirrors.

The James Webb Space Telescope is the largest, most powerful telescope in the world. OK, it’s not in the world, it’s a million miles away from Earth. It is so big that it had to fold origami-style to fit inside the rocket to launch. Keep watching as I make an origami telescope modeled after the Webb.

Space Telescopes see by using mirrors to reflect and focus light from distant stars. The bigger the mirror, the more it can collect and further it can see. Instead of sending one giant mirror into space, the Webb telescope has 18 smaller hexagon shaped mirrors that allow the telescope to fold. When unfolded in space, the hexagon mirrors look like a giant snowflake.

The mirrors on the Webb telescope have a layer of gold to help them reflect infrared light. This type of light is not visible to our eyes. Instead, we feel it as heat. By observing infrared light, Webb will be able to see objects that are so far away that the expansion of the universe has made their light shift from visible to infrared. It will also be able to see through dust in our universe.

Because the telescope is seeing infrared light, it is super sensitive to any heat. That’s why its orbit around the sun is a million miles away from Earth. We don’t have any of that Earth and Moon heat to interfere our deep space photos. The Webb telescope also has a massive, multi-layer sunshield that keeps the golden hexagons in an icy shadow.

Seagulls and Crickets Snowflake Template – PDF (Advanced)

Why did I make a snowflake with seagulls and crickets? It goes back to a story from 1848 when Utah pioneers were saved from a cricket infestation when large flocks of California gulls came and feasted on the crickets. The crickets were eating the brand new crops for the early settlers. They fought back and tried to control the pests, but there were too many and their crops were at risk of being destroyed. They prayed for help before the Seagulls came to the rescue. You can read the whole story here: Miracle of the Gulls

Let’s talk about the Bruno Snowflake. The Disney animated movie, “Encanto,” is about a family that has “gifts” or special powers that they use to help the family and the villagers. One of those family members is Bruno, and his ability is to see into the future. Not everyone appreciates what he sees and he decides to leave the family and he disappears. The family doesn’t talk much about him, and there is a catchy song about not talking about him.

This snowflake pattern is meant to look like Bruno with an hourglass representing his ability to look into the future.
